 Guadalupe River Fly Fishing Guides Report and River Conditions:  Monday May 26, 2014...Memorial Day...Observations at the third crossing revealed tranquil conditions in the morning with cool temps and overcast skies.  My buddy Chris Jackson from Action Angler had a half day morning guide trip and they barely made it off the water before the storm hit.  They were lucky because there was lightning and heavy winds.  In fact, I shot the photo above from my deck on the Guadalupe River.  The funnel cloud had clear rotation, but did not develop into a tornado.

Guadalupe River Fly Fishing Guide Report and River conditions:  Wednesday May 28, 2014; observations at the third crossing below Canyon Lake revealed clearing water conditions after yesterday's flash flood.  The flow below the dam went from 56 cfs to 2,500 cfs overnight .  Obviously the water became chocolate and un-fishable.  On the upside: The Edwards Aquifer is up almost five feet!

Guadalupe River Fly Fishing Guides Report and River Conditions:  Updated Thursday May 29, 2014; observations at the third crossing on the Guadalupe River below Canyon Lake revealed a healthy Trico and PMD hatch.  The water was still off color but clearing.  The flows were robust from many springs and creeks contributing their share.  There were two fly fishers on the water fishing downstream of the third crossing.  The weather was beautiful with morning temps in the low 60's F. and evening temps in the mid 80's F.

Guadalupe River Fly Fishing Guides Report and River Conditions: Updated Friday May 30, 2014; observations and conditions at the third crossing on the Guadalupe River below Canyon Lake revealed morning temps in the low 60's F. and cool north winds.  The Tricos and PMD's were hatching like there's no tomorrow.  The flows are robust from high aquifer levels and runoff from the recent rain event.  There was no one on the river this morning taking advantage of the great conditions.

Guadalupe River Fly Fishing Guides Report and River Conditions:  Updated Sunday June 1, 2014; Two boat, half day Guadalupe Trout fly fishing expedition/lesson produced four new fly fishers.  The weather was mild with early morning overcast and temps in the low 70's F.  Even though our trainees were green, we landed several nice Guadalupe Rainbow Trout.  Three fish were in the 20 inch class approaching almost five pounds.  These fish jumped and made blinding speed runs hoping to break us off.  We didn't encounter any tubers and the San Juan Worm was the winning fly!

Guadalupe River Fly Fishing Guide Report and River Conditions: Monday June 2, 2014; evening scouting trip at the fourth crossing revealed a good Trico hatch with BWO's too.  There were a few Guadalupe Trout rising, but they appeared to be gulping mouthfuls of drowned spinners and not individual flies.  This is hard to imitate; can you imagine casting a mouthful, or 10-15 flies on one drift?

Guadalupe River Fly Fishing Guides Report and River Conditions:  Tuesday June 3, 2014; Half day scouting trip on the lower Guadalupe River near Belmont produced some nice bass and sunfish on yellow poppers.  The water was relatively clear with flows about 400 cfs.  Wow, there was a lot of humidity in this area of the state!

Guadalupe River Fly Fishing Guides Report Near Austin and San Antonio Texas: Updated Wednesday June 4, 2014; Observations at the fouirth crossing on the Guadalupe River below Canyon Lake showed no fishermen or tubers.  There was a massive Trico and PMD hatch about 7:30 am.  There were a few un-predictable fish rising to this opportunity, but they were gulping mouth fulls of bugs instead of individuals.

Guadalupe River Fly Fishing Guides Report and River Conditions;  Updated Thursday June 5, 2014; observations at the third crossing on the Guadalupe River below Canyon Lake revealed no fishermen or tubers.  There was no one in sight.  There were Tricos and PMDs coming off in the morning  The Guadalupe River Rainbow Trout were feeding mainly sub-surface.

Guadalupe River Fly Fishing Guide Report and River Conditions:  Friday June 6, 2014; full day trip with Jimmy Adams and his lovely wife Sarah produced several Guadalupe Rainbow Trout up to 5 lbs (20 inches); we also caught and released two nice catfish on fly and some nice sunfish too!

Guadalupe River Fly Fishing Guides and Current River Conditions near San Antonio and Austin Texas.  Updated Saturday June 7, 2014;  Half day fly fishing lesson/rafting float trip produced two new fly fishers.  Sandra and Rex Whittin joined Expedition Outfitters guide Kevin Stubbs on a fun filled time catching and releasing several hard fighting fish.  They caught on quickly!  We didn't encounter very many tubers at all!

Guadalupe River Fly Fishing Guides Report and River Conditions near Austin and San Antonio Texas:  Sunday June 8, 2014; observations at the third crossing on the Guadalupe River below Canyon Lake revealed no fishermen or tubers.  The day held overcast skies and intermittent light rain showers. The temps were in the mid 70's F. and very pleasant.

Guadalupe River Fly Fishing Guide Report and River Conditions:  Updated Monday June 9, 2014; evening scouting trip at the fourth crossing on the Guadalupe River below Canyon Lake revealed no fishermen and a handful of quiet tubers.  The evening was overcast with light showers.  There was a nice PMD hatch though.

Devils River Fly Fishing Guides Report and River Conditions:  Thursday June 12, 2104; three day scouting trip at the Devils River revealed all of the usual players in their favorite haunts.  The monster smallmouth bass were eager to pursue our flies.  We also had many explosive takes on  top water patterns for large mouth bass.  The temps were in the 70's F. to low 90's F.  Wish you were here!

Guadalupe River Fly Fishing Guides Report and River Conditions:  Updated Saturday June 14, 2014; half day trip /fly fishing lesson with Scott from San Antonio was postponed due to rain.  We started our fly fishing lesson on the banks of the Guadalupe River at Gruene.  Before we could embark on our float, the rain storms hit.  We rescheduled our trip for an August date.

Guadalupe River Fly Fishing Guides Report and River Conditions near San Antonio and Austin Texas updated Monday June 16, 2014.  Observations at the third crossing below Canyon Lake revealed two fishermen  who reported nice catches of small bass and sunfish.  The weather was partly cloudy with highs in the 80's F.

Devils River Fly Fishing Guides Report and River Conditions:  Updated Tuesday June 17, 2014; Two day trip with John and Will York produced many smallmouth and two largemouth bass.  We caught and released probably twenty smallmouth.  A couple were in the 3-5lb class.  Heavy streamers were the ticket.  Wish you were here!

 

Devils River Fly Fishing Guides Report and River Conditions:  Updated Wednesday June 18, 2014; Devils River Fly Fishing Guide trip with John and Will York yielded too many smallmouth bass to count; two smallmouth monsters were in the five pound class...Outstanding!!  We also landed and released two largemouth.  The weather was overcast with cool summertime temps in the mid 80's F.  Will and his brother John were expert anglers.  Please see video below.  Wish you were here!

 Guadalupe River Fly Fishing Guides Report and River Conditions:  Updated Friday June 20, 2014.  Fly Fishing Classes, lessons and instruction are the building blocks for success in this activity.  Russell Jenkines and his buddy Lou from San Antonio joined Expedition Outfitters guide Kevin Stubbs for a half day lesson/fishing guide trip.  The guys caught on...This isn't alway the case, but the guide was lucky to have people that listen and process information.  We caught and released too many fish to count.  The weather was delightful with morning temps in the low 70's F. and the early afternoon temps were in the mid 80's F.

 

Guadalupe River Fly Fishing Guide Report and River Conditions:  Updated June 23, 2014;  Half day flyfishing float trip on the warmwater section of the Guadalupe River with Mark Nilson from Washington State and his son in-law produced too many fish to count.  We caught and released many sunfish and bass.  The weather was cool and overcast throughout the morning giving us the edge.  Wish you were here!

Guadalupe River Fly Fishing Report and River Conditions:  Updated June 24, 2014; Guadalupe River Fly Fishing float with John Surles and his grandson Jonathan produced too many sunfish and bass to count.  Some of our largemouth bass were in the 3-4 lb range.  The morning was overcast keeping the temperatures in the comfortable range.  We did not encounter another person on our three mile float.

Guadalupe River Fly Fishing Guides Report and River Conditions:  Updated Wednesday June 25, 2014; We had a scheduled two day float with John Surles from Louisiana and he arrived this morning with his granddaughter to find thunderstorms in the area with frequent lightning.  We scrubbed our trip in the intrerest of safety.  Turned out, it was the right call.  Expedition Outfitters also offers fly fishing classes, lessons and instruction near San Antonio and Austin Texas.

 

Guadalupe Fly Fishing Guides Report and River Conditions:  Updated Thursday June 26,2014; brief scouting trip at the third crossing on the Guadalupe River below Canyon Lake revealed light rain showers and overcast conditions.  The temps were comfortable in the 70 degree F. range.  There was a prolific Trico and BWO hatch.  We saw many sunfish and small bass gulping mouthfulls of drowned spinners. Guadalupe River Fly Fishing Guide Report and River Conditions:  Friday June 27, 2014; Two hour fly fishing lesson with Laura from the Seguin area produced a new fly fisher.  We can't take total credit because she attended an Orvis training school awhile back.  The morning was cool with overcast skies in the 75 degree F. range.  After our stream side casting lesson, we did some wade fishing in the Guadalupe River.  The water felt refreshing!  Expedition Outfitters offers fly fishing classes, lessons and instruction near Austin and San Antonio Texas.

Guadalupe Fishing Guide Report and River Conditions:  Updated Sunday June 29, 2014;  Half day scouting trip on the upper Guadalupe River near Bergheim produced many fiesty "Guadalupe Bass."  The Guadalupe River above Canyon Lake has high numbers of our "Texas State Fish" The Guadalupe Bass.  The preferred patterns were small yellow poppers and small olive green "Wooly Buggers".  We saw a few canoeists along the way, but they weren't fishing.  The temps were in the high 70's to low 80's F with overcast morning skies.

Guadalupe Fishing Guide Report and River Conditions:  Monday June 30, 2014; Eveniing observations at the third crossing on the Guadalupe River below Canyon Lake revealed no fishermen or tubers.  A common mis-perception: the tubers make it impossible to fish and have a good time.  The truth is: They arrive Friday evening on the weekends and don't awake till lunchtime on Saturday.  We are usually off the water by then.  On Sunday they are headed back to Houston because check out time is 11:00 am.  The bass fishing action on topwater fly patterns has been good.

 

Guadalupe Fishing Guide Report and River Conditions:   Updated Tuesday July 1, 2014;  Brief scouting trip at the fourth crossing produced several nice Guadalupe River Bass and one small Guadalupe Rainbow Trout.  There were virtually no tubers and no other fishermen.  The afternoon temps were in the mid 90's F. with a really nice breeze to cool you.

Guadalupe Fishing Guide Report and River Conditions:  Wednesday July 2, 2014; morning scouting trip on the upper Guadalupe River above Canyon Lake revealed many Guadalupe Bass and numerous sunfish.  The preferred fly was a small yellow popper.  The water was clear with a light green tint. There were no other people on the river.  They were sleeping in, on a summer day.  Wish you were here!

Guadalupe River Fly Fishing Guide Report and River Conditions:  Thursday July 3, 2014; Morning scouting trip on the lower Guadalupe River produced some nice sunfish and fiesty Guadalupe Bass too.  Today we were casting small, olive green "Wooly Buggers."  The water was clear and cool with nobody else on our stretch of the river.  We hugged the shade of the cypress and pecan trees.  We spent plenty of time wade fishing because the water was refreshing!

 Guadalupe River Fly Fishing Report and River Conditions:  Friday July 4th, 2014;  Happy Birthday to our Nation!  Morning scouting report at the third crossing on the Guadalupe River below Canyon Lake showed a nice Trico hatch.  Tricos are the smallest member of the "May Fly" family.  There were quite a few sunfish sipping drowned spinners.  There were no other anglers or other user groups until about 11:30 am.  A few families trickled by on inner tubes enjoying the scenery

 

Guadalupe River Fly Fishing Guide Report and River Conditions near Austin and San Antonio Texas.  Updated Saturday July 5th, 2014; Morning fly fishing lesson with Dave Allwine from upstate Texas (DFW area) produced a new fly fisher.  Dave caught on pretty fast.  He has a military background, therefore he listened...or else.  Even with holiday conditions we managed to land a couple of fish on a lesson.  We're hitting the water tomorrow morning for a half day trip to put our new skills to work.  We will update you tomorrow.  Expedition Outfitters offers fly fishing classes, lessons, guided trips and instruction near Austin and San Antonio Texas.

Guadalupe River Fly Fishing Guides Report and River Conditions:  Sunday July 6, 2014; Half day lesson/fly fishing float trip with Dave Allwine produced many hard fighting sunfish and small to medium sized bass.  The weather was pleasant with a cool overcast morning in the high 60's F....of course it warmed to 89 F. by noon. Guadalupe River Fly Fishing Guide Report and River Conditions:  Updated Monday July 7, 2014; Evening scouting trip at the third crossing on the Guadalupe River below Canyon Lake revealed no other fishermen or tubers.  The water was clear and cool to the touch.  We caught and released several feisty Guadalupe Bass.  Yellow poppers were the ticket.  

Guadalupe Fishing Guide Report and River Conditions:  Tuesday July 8, 2014; observations at the third crossing on the Guadalupe River downstream of Canyon Lake revealed no fishermen, no tubers, no Harley Riders and a very peaceful and tranquil day following the fourth of July madness.  The temps started out in the low 70's F. and made it to 90 F. with partly cloudy skies.  I'm glad we're past the summer solstice.  The days are getting shorter.

Guadalupe River Fly Fishing Guide Report and River Conditions:  Wednesday June 9, 2014; evening observations at the fourth crossing below Canyon Lake on the Guadalupe River showed a handful of tubers and kayakers.  They were all taking out at the fourth crossing.  That means the next three miles of water were unmolested.  There was a nice Caddis and Trico hatch happening earlier in the day.  The morning started out cool at 69 degrees F.; of course it warmed later into the low 90's F.  Expedition Outfitters provides fly fishing classes, lessons and instruction near Austin and San Antonio Texas.

Guadalupe River Fly Fishing Guide Report and River Conditions:  Thursday June 10, 2014; Morning scouting trip near Bergheim on the Guadalupe River upstream of Canyon Lake produced many fiesty Guadalupe Bass and sunfish too.  We didn't see any other user groups on the river.  The weather started out cool at 69 degrees F.  Of course, the afternoon heated up to 92 degrees F.  Expedition Outfitters offers fly fishing classes, lessons and instruction near Austin and San Antonio Texas.

 

Guadalupe River Fly Fishing Guide Report and River Conditions:  Updated Friday July 11, 2014; morning scouting trip at the fourth crossing on  the Guadalupe River below Canyon Lake showed nobody on the river at 8:00 am.  There was a nice Trico hatch though.  I didn't see any fish rising for the delicate morsels however.  I'm pretty sure they were down below feeding on minnows, fry and nymphs.  The weather was pleasant and cool at 68 degrees F. with overcast skies until 2:00 pm...then it warmed up to 90 F.  We caught and released a couple of nice Guadalupe Bass before departing.  Expedition Outfitters offers Fly Fishing Classes, Lessons and Instruction near Austin and San Antonio Texas.

 

Guadalupe River Fly Fishing Guide Report and River Conditions:  Saturday July 12, 2014; Morning scouting trip at the fourth crossing on the Guadalupe River below Canyon Lake showed no other fishermen or floaters.  There was a Trico hatch coming off at 7:30 am.  There were a few sunfish rising to the tasty morsels.  We caught and released two nice Guadalupe Rainbow Trout on streamers however.  They liked the purple wooly bugger.  Expedition Outfitters offers fly fishing classes, lessons, instruction and guided fishing trips on the rivers near San Antonio and Austin Texas.

Guadalupe Fly Fishing Guide Report and River Conditions:  Sunday July 13, 2014; half day fly fishing lesson/fishing float trip with James Saenz and his pretty wife Brandy produced two new fly fishers.  They both caught on pretty fast.  Everybody got several nice takes, although the action was a little slow.  Even with slow conditions, we managed to land a couple of decent fish.  Expedition Outfitters offers fly fishing lessons, classes and instruction in the Austin and San Antonio Texas area.

Guadalupe Fishing Guide Report and River Conditions:  Monday July 14, 2014; Morning scouting trip at the third crossing on Guadalupe River Road below Canyon Lake revealed several eager and willing small bass and sunfish.  The morning temps were pleasant at 70 degrees F.  There was a light south breeze to cool the fishermen.  The fish seemed to like our yellow poppers.  Expedition Outfitters offers fly fishing lessons, classes and instruction near Austin and San Antonio Texas.

Guadalupe Fishing Guide Report and River Conditions:  Tuesday July 15, 2014; morning scouting trip on the Guadalupe River at the fourth crossing below Canyon Lake revealed no other fishermen or tubers.  The temps were pleasant in the 70 degree F. range.  There was a prolific Trico hatch with no trout rising for them.  There were however, a few sunfish rising to sip the tiny flies from the surface.  We caught and released several nice Guadalupe Bass and one Guadalupe Rainbow Trout about 16 inches long.  The trout fell for a Caddis emerger, and the bass liked the yellow popper again.

Guadalupe Fly Fishing Guide Report and River Conditions:  Wednesday July 16, 2014; evening scouting trip at the third crossing on the Guadalupe River below Canyon Lake revealed no fishermen or tubers.  In fact it was very tranquil.  We cast a few flies to willing Guadalupe Bass and a few sunfish.  The evening temps were very comfortable because we are knee deep in cool Guadalupe River water.

Guadalupe Fishing Guide Report and River Conditions near Austin and San Antonio Texas:  Thursday July 17, 2014; Half day fly fishing lesson/guide trip was shortened by the threat of thunderstorms.  The morning started out overcast and cool in the lower 70's F.  We took advantage of the dry conditions and did a two hour fly casting lesson with our client Lisa from San Antonio.  We postponed our float trip because the radar showed showers headed our way.  We have rescheduled our float trip with Lisa for next week.  Expedition Outfitters offers fly fishing classes, instruction and lessons near San Antonio and Austin Texas.

 

Guadalupe Fishing Guide Report and River Conditions:  Friday July 18, 2014; Guadalupe River Fly Fishing/Scouting trip in the warmwater section of the river showed very few people and no tubers until late afternoon.  We did a short wade fishing trip landing several feisty Guadalupe Bass on yellow poppers.  We also caught and released several big sunfish that hit our flies.  The weather was very pleasant with partly cloudy skies and high temps in the upper 70's F...hard to believe it's this nice in a Texas summer!  Expedition Outfitters provides guided fly fishing trips, fly fishing classes, lessons and instruction in the Austin and San Antonio Texas area.

 

Guadalupe River Fly Fishing Report and River Conditions:  Saturday July 19, 2014; private fly fishing lesson with family friend Pete Beltran from San Antonio, Texas produced a new fly fisher.  Pete made the transition from the "wrist -snap" technique he's used to while fishing his baitcaster; to the proper technique of keeping his wrist straight for fly fishing.  The weather was beautiful with cool morning temps in the 70's F.  It never got above 85 degrees F. all day.  There were a few folks out during the morning and afternoon.  Expedition Outfitters provides fly fishing classes, lessons and instruction near San Antonio and Austin Texas.

Guadalupe Fishing Guide Report and River Conditions:  Sunday July 20, 2014; half day guide trip/flyfishing instruction with Gene and Sherry from  San Antonio produced two new fly fishers.  We started out with riverside casting instruction, knot tying and general overview.  After that, we got into the raft and floated about three river miles and we actually got a couple of fish along the way!  Expedition Outfitters provides fly fishing lessons, classes and instruction near Austin and San Antonio Texas.

Guadalupe River Fly Fishing Guides Report and River Conditions:  Monday July 21, 2014; half day morning fly fishing guide trip on the lower Guadalupe River produced several nice bass.  Joe Reynolds from Tulsa and his boys joined Expedition Outfitters guide Kevin Stubbs for a three mile float.  We saw a few tubers along the way and caught fish right behind them as they floated by.  Once again, yellow poppers were the ticket.  Expedition Outfitters has guided fly fishing trips, fly fishing lessons, instruction and fly fishing classes near San Antonio and Austin Texas.

Guadalupe Fishing Guide Report and River Conditions:  Tuesday July 22, 2014  Morning scouting trip at the fourth crossing on the Guadalupe River below Canyon Lake revealed a 5lb catfish on a "bitch creek nymph."   The fish put up a valiant battle, but was subdued with a fast action five weight fly rod.  We thought the catch might be a smallmouth bass...but our balloon was deflated upon seeing the catfish.  Expedition Outfitters offers fly fishing lessons, classes and instruction in the Austin and San Antonio Texas area.

Guadalupe River Fly Fishing Guide Report and river conditions:  Wednesday July 23, 2014; half day fly fishing instructional guide trip with Lisa from San Antonio produced a new fly fisher.  Lisa caught and released a nice largemouth bass and a Kentucky Spotted bass.  The largemouth fought hard doubling the five weight rod over.  The "Spotted Bass" seemed to fight twice as hard, but we managed to land it.  Expedition Outfitters offers fly fishing lessons, classes and instruction in the Austin and San Antonio Texas area.

 

Guadalupe Fishing Guide Report and River Conditions:  Thursday July 24, 2014;  Private fly fishing lesson for Mick Zealand produced a new fly fisher.  Mick caught on quickly, he is former military so he knows to listen...or else.  The Guadalupe River didn't have many tubers or other users today.  We pretty much had it to ourselves.  The water was cool in the upper 70's F.  We accessed the area around Lazy L and L.  Expedition Outfitters offers fly fishing lessons, classes and instruction near Austin and San Antonio Texas.

Guadalupe River Fly Fishing Guide Report and River Conditions:  Friday July 25, 2014;  Half day Guadalupe River fly fishing lesson/guide trip produced two new fly fishers.  Ray Railey and his lovely wife joined us from San Antonio Texas.  We started with stream side casting lessons then we got into the raft and fished about three river miles.  We caught and released several small bass and many brightly colored sunfish.  The most popular fly was the yellow popper with white rubber legs.  The water was a little off color, but that gave us an advantage.  We saw a few tubers and kayakers but they didn't get in our way.

Guadalupe River Fly Fishing Guide Report and River Conditions:  Saturday July 26, 2014; private fly fishing lesson with Eddie Brikahl from northern Colorado produced an new fly fisher.  We started with stream side casting lessons, knot tying and general overview of the sporting activity.  We caught and released several small bass and sunfish.  Once again, the yellow popper saved our ass!  Expedition Outfitters offers fly fishing classes, lessons and instruction near Austin and San Antonio Texas.

Guadalupe Fishing Guides Report and River Conditions:  Sunday July 27, 2014; half day instructional fly fishing lesson/Guadalupe River float trip produced two new fly fishers.  William Wang and his lady friend Lisa caught on real fast.  We caught and released several nice bass and sunfish on the famous yellow popper (with white rubber legs).  Expedition Outfitters has fly fishing classes, lessons and instruction near San Antonio and Austin Texas.

Guadalupe River Fly Fishing Guides Report and River Conditions:  Monday July 28, 2014; half day instructional fly fishing float on the lower Guadalupe River below Canyon Lake revealed several hungry sunfish and little bass.  We caught and released many small critters and the preferred fly was a yellow popper.  Expedition Outfitters provides fly fishing classes, lessons and instruction near New Braunfels, Texas.

Guadalupe River Fishing Report and Guide Observations:  Friday August 1, 2014; half day morning scouting trip on the Guadalupe River near Lazy L and L produced many brightly colored sunfish and several nice largemouth bass.  The topwater pattern brought the most action.  Once again, the yellow hard body popper with white rubber legs ruled.  The weather was spectacular with temps in the mid 70's to low 80's F.

Guadalupe River Fly Fishing Guide Report and River Conditions:  Wednesday August 13, 2014; prolonged half day trip with Hunter Hamilton and his family produced some bass and sunfish.  The heavy weighted streamer produced the most strikes.  The weather was pleasant with morning temps in the 70's F.  Overall the day was pretty nice after jumping into the river numerous times to cool off.

Guadalupe River Fy Fishing Guide Report and River Conditions:  Friday August 15, 2014 Fly Fishing Guide Report for the Guadalupe River at the third crossing on River Road showed no tubers or fishermen in the morning.  The temperatures were pleasant in the mid 70's F.  There was a pretty light BWO and Trico hatch.  We saw a few sunfish rising for the fallen spinners though.  Immature bass were sipping dry flies too.  Expedition Outfitters teaches fly fishing lessons, fly fishing classes and fly fishing instruction near Austin Texas, New Braunfels Texas and San Antonio Texas all year long.

Guadalupe Fishing Guide Report and Fly Fishing Conditions:  Updated August 24, 2014.  Half day fly fishing trip/lesson with Kurt, Garrett and Marshall from Austin introduced everyone to fly fishing.  Unfortunately, the fly action sucked so we converted to casting soft plastics with spinning rods and picked up several sunfish and smallmouth bass.  The weather was nice early on and rose to 90 degrees by 2:00 pm.  Expedition Outfitters has fly fishing classes, lessons and fly fishing instruction in the New Braunfels, San Antonio and Austin Texas areas.

 

Guadalupe Fishing Guide Report and Fly Fishing Conditions:  Updated Monday August 25, 2014; evening scouting trip at the fourth crossing near Rio Guadalupe Resort produced two nice rainbow trout in the 16 inch class.  The winning fly was the San Juan worm.  We dead drifted it behind a stonefly nymph.  The weather was hot in the upper 90's but the water was cold and relatively clear.

Guadalupe Fishing Guides Fly Fishing Report and River Summary:  Saturday, August 30, 2014; early morning scouting trip at the third crossing on Guadalupe River Road below Canyon Lake yielded several sunfish and Guadalupe Bass on poppers.  There was no one else out, until afternoon.  The Labor Day crowds are pretty subdued this year with very little activity other than a Life Flight Air Ambulance evacuation of an unfortunate swimmer who dove into shallow water and suffered C-spine injuries.  It's nice to know multi-million dollar technology and trained medical professionals are available to save our ass in the event we get injured.  Please see video below.  The weather was nice with early morning temps in the low 70's F. and evening temps in the low 90's F.

Devils River Fly Fishing Guide Trip and River Conditions:  Wednesday September 24, 2014.  The first day of a two day and three night trip at Sycamore Canyon Ranch produced too many bass to count.  The weather was perfect with cool mornings and warm afternoons.  Rick and Cameron Pratt from Port Aransas were our guests.  They were expert fisher people.  They could read the water and they were good casters too!  Expedition Outfitters offers guided Devils River Fishing Trips.

Guadalupe Fishing Guides Fly Fishing Report and River Conditions:  Sunday September 28, 2014; morning scouting trip at the third crossing on Guadalupe River Road below Canyon Lake revealed a prolific PMD and Trico hatch.  The weather was cool in the low 60's F. with fog and quickly clearing skies.  There were no fishermen or tubers.  It's a little late in the season for tubers, but it's comforting to know they are gone.  Adios Mal Amigos!

Guadalupe Fishing Guides Report and Fly Fishing Conditions below Canyon Lake near New Braunfels: Thursday October 2, 2014;  Scouting observations at the third crossing on the Guadalupe River revealed no fishermen, no tubers, and no Harley Davidson motorcycles (if you ride one you might enjoy it, but we hate you because of the noise).  There was a nice caddis and BWO hatch in the evening though.  The weather was beautiful with morning temps in the 70's and evening temps in the low 90's F.

Guadalupe fishing Guides Report and Fly Fishing Conditions:  Updated Friday October 3, 2014; morning scouting trip on the Guadalupe River at the third crossing below Canyon Lake revealed a prolific caddis, Bwo, and Trico hatch.  The sunfish and smaller bass were sipping the bugs from the surface, but the larger bass were preying on the pre-occupied sunfish and minnows.  The morning was cool with high temps in the low 80's F.

Guadalupe Fishing Guides Fly Fishing Report and River Conditions:  Saturday October 4, 2014 full day float for Perry, Shawn, and Allen from the Austin and San Antonio area produced three new fly fishers.  We saw one other fisherman and a handful of tubers.  The weather was great with morning temps in the low 60's F and the afternoon temps in the low 80's F. Guadalupe Fishing Guides Fly Fishing Report and River Conditions: Thursday October 7, 2014; Half day afternoon wade fishing trip on the Guadalupe River with Rush Hodgson and his group from Pennsylvania produced lots of brightly colored sunfish and few good bass.  There were no tubers or other fishermen.  The day was beautiful with moderate temps in the high 80's.  Steve is pictured below with his small mouth bass.

Guadalupe Fishing Guide Report and Fly Fishing Conditions: Sunday October 12, 2014; Guided fishing trip with Steve and Marcia Crouch from Tennessee yielded a meager turn out of bass.  The weather went from warm to 30 degrees cooler overnight.  Even though we got some good bites and takes, we struggled and called it a day a bit early.  We thought, what's the sense in beating a dead horse?

Guadalupe River Fishing Guides report and fly fishing conditions:  Updated Saturday, October 25, 2014.  Morning scouting trip on the San Marcos River yielded quite a few nice bass on poppers and weighted streamers.  Overall, the rubber legged Wooly bugger was our best pattern.  The flow was about 100 cfs with beautiful weather and clear water conditions.

Guadalupe River Fly Fishing Guides Report and River Conditions:  Wednesday December 31, 2014; evening scouting conditions at the third crossing on the Guadalupe River below Canyon Lake revealed quite a few fishermen and fisherwomen.  The conditions were overcast and temps in the low 40's F.  It was pretty windy, but still fishable.  The successful fly patterns proved to be tiny nymphs fished under an indicator.  Caddis emergers, Prince Nymphs and Girdle bugs were used as attractors above a size 22 drowned Trico spinner.  Expedition Outfitters offers guided fly fishing trips, fly fishing lessons, and fly fishing instruction in the Austin, San Antonio and New Braunfels Texas areas.

 

Guadalupe River Fly Fishing Guides Report and River Conditions:  Updated Thursday January 1, 2015.  New Years Day was cold and wet on the Guadalupe River with temperatures hovering in the mid 30's F.   The skies were overcast but that didn't stop a few tough souls that had the luck to get a kitchen pass away from the family.  There were a few successful anglers using nymphs and streamers.  The popular patterns proved to be the San Juan worm, Caddis emerger and various small midge patterns.  Of course, the streamers were bugger variations. Guadalupe River Fly Fishing Guides Report and River Conditions:  Monday January 12, 2015;  Scouting trip at the third crossing on the Guadalupe River below Canyon Lake showed moderate morning temps in the high 30's and 40's F.  The morning was foggy and still for the most part making it easier to approach fish in shallow water.  About noon the conditions changed with the arrival of a cold front.  The bite slowed to non-existent and we left the river to warm up.  Can you believe it, the Bitch Creek attractor and the San Juan worm were the winning flies. Guadalupe River Fly Fishing Guides Report and River Conditions:  Thursday January 22, 2015;  evening observations at the third crossing on the Guadalupe River below Canyon Lake revealed several dumbass guides and several dumb ass fishermen who neglected to monitor and watch the radar and conditions.  There were numerous fishermen caught in a severe thunderstorm becuase their guides did not pay attention to changing conditions.  We cut all of our trips short today because we saw the weather approaching.

Guadalupe River Fly Fishing Guides and River Report  Conditions:  Monday Feb. 2, 2015.  Evening observations at the third crossing on the Guadalupe River below Canyon Lake revealed a small number of fly fishers.  The evening was a little overcast with temps topping out arond 49 degrees F. After talking to many different anglers the best fly for the day was the Bitch Creek Nymph.  Don't doubt me.  Or maybe it was the Biotch Creek Nymph.

Guadalupe River Fly Fishing Guides Report and River Conditions:  Updated Friday February 20, 2015.   Two boat, three mile float with Jayme Sperring, his dad and brother etal produced quite a few hard fighting Guadalupe Trout.  The best fly of the day was the lowly Prince Nyph,  Rob landed a Guadalupe Rainbow trout in the 6-7 lb range on 5X tippet.  The day started out with gusty southeast winds but ended up in the high 70's F.

Devils River Fly Fishing Scouting Report and River Conditions:  Wednesday March 3, 2015; Whirlwind trip to Sycamore Canyon Ranch on the Devils revealed a beautiful river with no other humans whatsoever.  We did see Golden Eagles, Red Tailed Hawks, a Zone Tailed hawk and other beautiful birds including a Green Kingfisher too.  The weather was spring like ahead of an Arctic Front.  We didn't go to fish, we were doing some improvements at the ranch cabin.  We high tailed it before the freezing rain and sleet hit.

Guadalupe River Fly Fishing Guide trips and river conditions:  Updated Tuesday March 10, 2015; full day trip with Jim and his son Pat produced several nice Guadalupe trout in the 3-4 lb range but we also managed to land a 25 lb Long Nosed Gar on 6 lb tippet.  The pre-historic fish was huge and it almost kicked our ass!  The weather was pleasant with clear blue skies in the evening.  The Guadalupe River was up almost 50% overnight.  We had a good Trico  and BWO hatch.

Guadalupe River Fly Fishing Guides Report and River Conditions:  Saturday March 14, 2015;  Full day guide trip with Erick Phillips and his son Michael from Austin yielded several Guadalupe Trout.  Michael caught and released his family's all time, biggest rainbow trout.  This fish was a male bruiser in the 6 lb class.  The fish fought like hell and we had to chase it with the raft.  During the battle, this huge trout went under the boat several times straining the rod, angler and tippet (5X) to the breaking point.  Michael landed the fish with a size 22 Trico "drowned spinner."  The weather was awesome with clear blue skies and temps in the mid 70's F.

Guadalupe River Fly Fishing Guides Report and River Conditions: Updated Wednesday March 25, 2015; evening observations at the third crossing on the Guadalupe River below Canyon Lake revealed no fishermen or fisher women.  The evening was beautiful with partly cloudy skies and temps in the high 70's F.  There was a nice Caddis and Hexagenia hatch but we didn't see any rising fish.  The rainbows are probably feeding like crazy on the sucker spawn roe.  The Red Horse Sucker spawn is in full stride and the Guadalupe trout love the high protein food source.  Expedition Outfitters offers guided fly fishing trips in the Texas Hill Country.

Guadalupe River Fly Fishing Guides Report and River Conditions:  Sunday March 29, 2015.  Roxana Newton and her buddy joined Chris Ruebusch for a half day Guadalupe River Fly Fishing Lesson and short float trip.  Chris said they caught on quickly and managed to land and release a nice rainbow trout.  The weather was picture perfect with clear blue skies and temps in the mid 70's F.

Guadalupe River Fly Fishing Guides Report and River Conditions:  Updated Saturday April 11, 2015; evening observations at the third crossing on the Guadalupe River below Canyon Lake revealed no fishermen whatsoever.  There was a nice evening caddis hatch that caused a handful of fish to slash at the passing bugs.  The weather was overcast with mild temps in the high 60's F.  The water was relatively clear with a chalky green tint.

 

Devils River Fly Fishing Guides Report and River Conditions:  Updated Wednesday May 27, 2015; the river flow is slow and clear despite recent rains and floods.  This can change in an instant:...hence the name "flash floods."  The weather was unpredictable with thunderstorms and tornadoes in the area.  

Devils River Fly Fishing Guides Report and River Conditions:  Saturday May 30, 2015; evening observations indicated a slight rise in the flow of the bottom end of the Devils River near the confluence with Lake Amistad.  The river is off color on the bottom end and subject to runoff the next couple of days.

Devils River Fly Fishing Guides Report and River Conditions:  Tuesday June 2, 2015; first day of a two day float with Spence Collins and his family produced too many smallmouth bass to count.  The bite was on and we took advantage of it.  The weather was partly cloudy and windy with river conditions unaffected by recent flooding elsewhere in the state.

 

Devils River Fly Fishing Guides Report and River Conditions:  Wednesday June 3 2015; day two of Devils River trip with Spence Collins, Laura Collins and Stephanie Collins produced a few more smallmouth and a largemouth bass.  It started out with cloudy and cool temps in the morning but warmed up to 90 degrees F. for the afternoon.  Even though the bite was light, we managed to have a good time snorkeling and sight seeing too.

Guadalupe River Fly Fishing Guides Report:  Thursday June 11, 2015; evening scouting trip at the upper Guadalupe River near Bergheim produced several nice Guadalupe Bass.  There were no other people out and the afternoon was beautiful with clear water and partly cloudy skies.  The rapids were nice with a flow of about 1,000 cfs.  Oh yea, the temperatures were pleasant in the high 80's F.  Expedition Outfitters offers guided fly fishing trips in the Texas Hill Country and beyond.

Guadalupe River Fly Fishing Guides Report and River Conditions:  Updated Saturday June 13th, 2015; morning private fly fishing lesson with Tim Lantos produced a new fly fisher.  Tim caught on pretty fast and followed instructions.  Thererfore he was successful.  He was a good sport because I kept calling him Tony.

Guadalupe River Fly Fishing Guides Report and River Conditions:  Monday June 15, 2015; The upper Guadalupe above Canyon Lake was flowing this morning at 975 cubic feet per second and the water was clear with a light green tint.  The weather conditions were pleasant with mild temps in the high 70's F. and partly cloudy skies.  The bite was light but we managed to land some feisty Guadalupe bass and some brightly colored sunfish on little yellow poppers.

Guadalupe River Fly Fishing Report and River Conditions:  Updated June 16th, 2015; Upper Guadalupe River flow at 975 cfs. The Guadalupe River is clear and clean above Canyon Lake.  The tropical storm has not affected us yet. 

Guadalupe River Fly Fishing Guides Report and River Conditions:  Updated Wednesday June 17, 2015; evening observations at the third crossing on the Guadalupe River below Canyon Lake revealed no fishermen but we had weather to keep them away.  We had off and on rain showers from Tropical Storm Bill.  It wasn't that bad but it kept the tourists away.  

San Marcos River Fly Fishing Guides Report and River Conditions:  Updated Sunday June 21st, 2015; our morning guide trip with Holly Coggins Hayes and her man Steven was cut short with heavy rain showers on the San Marcos River.  We did have a good scouting trip checking out the springs at the source of the San Marcos River where they bubble up out of the  ground/aquifer.  We're going to get together and complete our trip another time.

Guadalupe River Fly Fishing Guides Report and River Conditions:  Monday June 22, 2015; morning scouting trip on the Guadalupe River above Canyon Lake near Bergheim yielded several nice Guadalupe Bass and many brightly colored sunfish.  The weather was mostly overcast with sunshine at times.  The winning fly of the day was a Grasshopper pattern.

Guadalupe River Fly Fishing Guide Trip: Friday July 10, 2015 Canyon Lake Dam Release 300 cfs. the water is relatively clear with an iced tea colored tint from the recent floods.  Our scouting trip was short but we managed to land several nice Guadalupe Bass.  The fish were active and hitting on yellow poppers.

Guadalupe River Fly Fishing Guides Report and River Conditions:  Saturday July 11, 2015; evening scouting trip on the lower Guadalupe revealed a fair amount of tubers and rafters.  Even with the other folks, we managed to land several nice Guadalupe Trout.  The San Juan worm was the favorite fly dropped below a stone fly nymph.

Guadalupe River Fly Fishing Guides Report and River Conditions:  Saturday August 15, 2015; Morning scouting trip at the third crossing on the Guadalupe River below Canyon Lake revealed a Canyon dam release rate of 200 cfs.  The water was clear with an ice tea colored stain from floods a couple of months ago.  The water color is usually green but it had a light brown tint from the tannic acid in the flood vegetation carried by the inflow of Canyon Lake.  The weather was overcast with local thunderstorms until about 8:30 am.  After that it was clear blue skies the rest of the day.  We found several nice Guadalupe Bass in the deeper pockets of the river.  The yellow popper was our go to fly.  Expedition Outfitters offers fly fishing classes, lessons and guided fly fishing trips near Austin, San Antonio and New Braunfels Texas.

Guadalupe River Fly Fishing Guides Report and River Conditions:  Wednesday September 9, 2015; evening scouting trip at the third crossing on the Guadalupe River below Canyon Lake produced many nice Guadalupe Bass and several brightly colored sunfish.  The chartreuse popper was the go to fly.  The Canyon Dam release and Guadalupe River flow was 207 cubic feet per second.  The weather was nice with temps in the high 70's F to 89 degrees F.

Guadalupe River Fly Fishing Guides Report and River Conditions:  Tuesday September 29th, 2015; half day guide trip with private jet pilots Kipp and Jim from Los Angeles California yielded lots of explosive strikes from bass and sunfish.  Unlike their poetic skills flying the Gulfstream Jet they arrived in...several fish proved hard to land.  Even with several wily hook ups, Kipp caught and released some beautiful fish.  Expedition Outfitters offers fly fishing guide trips in the Texas Hill Country near Austin, San Antonio and New Braunfels, Texas.

Guadalupe River Fly Fishing Guides Report and River Conditions:  Sunday October 4, 2015; Jeremy Compton and his son joined us for a half day instructional/fly fishing trip.  The morning started off cool with temps in the mid 50's F.  After a couple of hours the temps climbed and there was a prolific Mayfly hatch.  There were Trico's and PMD's and Hexagenias too.  The small bass and sunfish were feeding on this feast.  We managed to catch and release quite a few fish during this period.

Guadalupe River Fly Fishing Guides Report and River Conditions:  October 8th, 2015.  Evening observations at the third crossing on the Guadalupe River below Canyon Lake revealed no one.  No tubers, no kayakers, and no fishermen.  The conditions were great with clear blue skies and comfortable temps in the 70's F.  There was a prolific Mayfly hatch earlier today.

Guadalupe River Fly Fishing Guides Report and River Conditions:  Friday October 9, 2015; instructional fly fishing trip with Caleb and Frank produced quite a few fish.  The weather was perfect with partly cloudy skies and pleasant temps in the 70's F.  Our new fly fishers were successful at landing sunfish and bass.  Caleb even caught two bass with one cast (he was using two flies).  The water was relatively clear with an ice tea stain.

Guadalupe River Fly Fishing Guides Report and River Conditions:  Sunday October 11, 2015; morning scouting trip on the upper Guadalupe River above Canyon Lake revealed clear water conditions with beautiful weather and clear blue skies.  The temps were perfect in the low 60's F and low humidity.  Our short trip from Bergheim to Edge Falls Road didn't take very long and yielded lots of Guadalupe Bass and brightly colored sunfish.  The yellow popper with white rubber legs was our go to fly.

Guadalupe River Fly Fishing Guides Report and River Conditions: Wednesday October 14, 2015; evening scouting trip at the third crossing on the Guadalupe River below Canyon Lake showed no body whatsoever.  No fishermen, tubers, kayakers or tourists.  There was a prolific mayfly hatch around 10:00 am with little bass, minnows and sunfish rising to the hatch.

Guadalupe River Fly Fishing Guides Report and River Conditions:  Thursday October 15, 2015; morning scouting trip on the upper Guadalupe River above Canyon Lake showed crystal clear water and low flows in the 60 cfs range.  The Guadalupe Bass were the first to reach the fly with small "male" largemouth challenging the Guads for dominance.  The weather was perfect with morning temps in the high 50's F. and evening temps in the low 90's F.

Guadalupe River Fly Fishing Guides Report and River Conditions:  Saturday October 17, 2015; morning scouting trip on the upper Guadalupe River above Canyon Lake showed crystal clear waters and small rapids and riffles.  The flow is back down from the spring and summer with good fishing conditions.  The Guadalupe Bass were active with quite a few fish smashing topwater patterns.  We also caught and released a couple of White Bass on Clouser Minnows.  Expedition Outfitters offers fly fishing classes, lessons and instruction in the Austin, San Antonio and New Braunfels areas.

 

Devils River Fly Fishing Guides Report and River Conditions:  Monday October 19, 2015; first day of a two day trip on the Devils River near the confluence of Lake Amistad produced too many smallmouth bass to count.  Luckily, we had two highly skilled fishermen making the guide look good.  The weather was perfect with overcast skies in the morning and partly cloudy skies in the afternoon.  Our best smallie is pictued below

Guadalupe River Fly Fishing Guides Report and River Conditions:   Thursday October 29; Evening scouting trip on the lower Guadalupe below Canyon Lake revealed beautiful weather with temps in the 70's and clear blue skies.  We caught and released several Guadalupe Bass on topwater patterns.

Guadalupe River Fly Fishing Report and River Conditions:  Sunday November 1st, 2015; evening scouting trip at the third crossing showed diminished flows from the flash flood with clear blue skies and temps in the 70's F.  The water was still chocolate with muddy color.  it should be fishable in a couple of days.

Guadalupe River Fly Fishing Guides Report and River Conditions:  Monday November 2, 2015; evening observations at the third crossing on the Guadalupe River below Canyon Lake showed clearing water and better fishing conditions.  There were numerous smallmouth and largemouth bass attacking our flies.

Guadalupe River Fly Fishing Guides Report and River Conditions:Wednesday November 4, 2015; Evening observations at the third crossing below Canyon Lake showed flood release levels from Canyon Lake.  Even though the Guadalupe is too high to fish, the Llano is at the perfect level of 125 cfs near Mason Texas.  

Guadalupe River Fly Fishing Guides Report and River Conditions:  Thursday November 5th, 2015; evening observations at the third crossing on the Guadalupe River below Canyon Lake showed more flood releases from canyon Dam in the 6,000 cfs range.  This level is too high to fish but we expect fishable flows and levels in a couple of more days.

Guadalupe River Fly Fishing Guides Report and River Conditions:  Sunday November 8, 2015; Observations at the third crossing on the Guadalupe River below Canyon Lake revealed clearing skies with lower river flows and clearing water conditions.  We managed to catch and release a few nice Guadalupe Bass today.  The ticket was a really small olive Clouser Minnow.  If you stripped it fast it worked.  If you didn't...well hell, it didn't work.  Expedition Outfitters provides guided fly fishing trips, fly fishing lessons, instruction and classes in the Austin, San Antonio and New Braunfels areas.

Guadalupe River Fly Fishing Guides Report and River Conditions:  November 10, 2015; Canyon Dam release 1,000 cubic feet per second.  The day was overcast with a little bit of light rain.  The water was stained a a little bit muddy.  Chris Jackson and Alvin Dedeaux fished from Rio Guadalupe Resort to Rocky Beach and picked up some nice fish including a fat smallmouth and beautiful silver striped bass.

Guadalupe River Fly Fishing Guides Report and River Conditions:  Wednesday November 11, 2015;  Canyon Dam release 1,000 cubic feet per second. Float trip with Chris Jackson from Action Angler showed some good whitewater and class III rapids in places.  We brought several fish to the boat but the most memorable fight was a chunky largemouth bass that jumped several times and ran like crazy.  

Guadalupe River Fly Fishing Guides Report and River Conditions:  Thursday November 12, 2015; evening scouting trip showed Canyon Dam release of 1,000 cubic feet per second.  This made for a nice flow with class III rapids in places.  The striper and black bass bite is on with topwater action.

Guadalupe River Fly Fishing Guides Report and River Conditions:  Friday November 13, 2015; scouting trip on the upper Guadalupe River near Bergheim showed beautiful water with flows around 150 cfs,  The bass and sunfish were on with many fish caught and released on topwater patterns.  The weather was beautiful with temps in the high 50's F and 60's.  Expedition Outfitters conducts guided fly fishing trips on the Guadalupe River and other Texas Hill Country streams.

Guadalupe River Fly Fishing Guides Report and River Conditions:  Saturday November 14th, 2015;  Canyon Dam release is 600 cubic feet per second; the creeks and springs are adding another 100 cubic feet per second.  The water is clearing with an olive green tint.  The weather was perfect with morning temps in the high 50's F and afternoon temps in the high 60's F.  Today, we got a combination of largemouth and smallmouth bass on topwater patterns. Yellow poppers were the ticket.

Guadalupe River Fly Fishing Guides Report and River Conditions:  Sunday November 15, 2015; Canyon Dam release app. 600 cubic feet per second with creeks and springs adding another 100 cfs with clear water conditions with green tint.  Sam Wood from the U.K. (he's a Boeing 777 pilot for British Airways) joined Expedition Outfitters guide Kevin Stubbs for a five mile float.  We caught and released too may fish to count.  The weather was mostly overcast with a little sunshine in the afternoon.  Luckily Sam had good experience going into this and things went smoothly.  The best fly of the day:  believe it or not...Bitch Creek Nymph.

Guadalupe River Fly Fishing Report and River Conditions:  November 17. 2015;  Canyon dam release 600 cfs; the creeks and springs are adding another 100 cfs.  We cancelled our trip today because of rainy conditions; we'll be out there tomorrow!

Guadalupe River Fly Fishing Guides Report and River Conditions:  November 18, 2015; Canyon dam release 600 cubic feet per second; the creeks and springs are adding additional clear water.  We caught and released several nice smallmouth and largemouth bass in the warmwater section of the Guadalupe River.  The chartreuse Clouser was the ticket.  The skies were clear blue with temps in the low 50's F - 70's F.

Guadalupe River Fly Fishing Guides Report and River Conditions:  Updated Friday November 20, 2015;  Canyon Dam release 600 cubic feet per second...evening scouting trip near the third crossing produced several nice Guadalupe Bass and some colorful sunfish.  The battles were hard fought on a three weight rod using dry flies to entice the quarry.  The weather was perfect with clear blue skies and temps in the 70's F

Guadalupe River Fly Fishing Guides Report and River Conditions:  Updated Monday November 23, 2015;  Evening scouting trip at the third crossing on the Guadalupe River Road yielded several Guadalupe Bass.  The weather was clear blue skies with temps in the high 60's F.  The water was relatively clear with a green tint.  Canyon Dam release was 600 cubic feet per second.  The hot fly was the Clouser Minnow.

 Guadalupe River trout Fishing Report and River Conditions:  Wednesday November 25, 2015; evening observations at the third crossing below Canyon Lake revealed a few fishermen targeting Guadalupe Rainbow trout.  The weather was overcast with rain showers.   

 Guadalupe Trout Fly Fishing Guides Report and River Conditions:  Friday November 27, 2015;  Canyon Dam release 150 cfs, water is clear with green tint.  Quite a few fishermen and fisherwomen at the the third crossing and good catching success.  Most of the fish crashed hopper patterns.  Guess they were hungry.  We also caught and released some nice rainbows on nymphs and streamers.

 

Guadalupe River Fly Fishing Guides Report and River Conditions:  Tuesday December 1, 2015; morning scouting trip at the fourth crossing produced several nice Guadalupe Trout on nymphs.  The flow was over 600 cfs but we used enough split shot to get our flies to the proper depth. 

Guadalupe River Fly Fishing Guides Report and River Conditions:  Wednesday December 2, 2015; Guadalupe trout fishing trip with Laura Drake from Midland Texas and her buddy Greg produced several hook ups with Guadalupe trout.  The weather was perfect with afternoon temps in the high 60's F and clear blue skies.  The successful flies were the lowly wooly bugger and stone fly nymphs with double brass beads.  

Guadalupe River Fly Fishing Guides Report and River Conditions:  Friday December 4, 2015; half day trip with Doug Donahue and his buddy Ron produced some nice Guadalupe Trout.  The weather was perfect with clear blue skies and afternoon temps in the high 60's F.  The release from Canyon Dam was 600 cfs making for some nice rapids in places.  The hot fly of the day was the San Juan worm.

Guadalupe River Fly Fishing Guides Report and River Conditions:  Saturday December 6. 2015; six mile float with Josh and Jeff from Dallas produced some nice Guadalupe Trout on nymphs.  The day was beautiful with clear blue skies and comfortable temps reaching 65 degrees F. today.  The Canyon Dam release was about 600 cubic feet per second with the creeks and springs adding another 50 cfs.  Our best fly of the trip was the Prince Nymph with a Drowned Trico Spinner as the dropper.  There was a prolific Trico and PMD hatch, but no rising fish in the higher flows.

Guadalupe River Fly Fishing Guides Report and River Conditions:  Tuesday December 8, 2015; evening scouting trip at the third crossing on the Guadalupe River below Canyon Lake revealed several fly fishers.  There was a a prolific BWO, Trico and a few Caddis near dark.  Canyon Dam release is 565 cubic feet per second with creeks and springs adding another 50 cfs.  Several nice Guadalupe trout were caught on nymphs under an indicator.

Guadalupe River Fly Fishing Guides Report and River Conditions:  Friday December 11, 2015; Canyon Dam release about 575 cubic feet per second.  Evening scouting trip at the third crossing revealed a couple of happy fishers with clear blue skies and temps in the lower 80's F.  The two ladies we saw were hooked up with Guadalupe Trout.  They were nymphing with indicators and double flies with split shot to get down.  We asked what they were using, and they replied "flies".

Guadalupe River Fly Fishing Guides Report and River Conditions:  Saturday December 12, 2015; Barry and Ethan from Houston joined us for a six mile float on the lower Guadalupe River below Canyon Lake.  The Canyon Dam release was about 600 cubic feet per second making for some nice whitewater rapids in places.  Our guys were pretty sharp in their presentation but we had a tough day with high winds and lots of leaves in the water snagging our hooks.  Nobody (other guide boats) did that well because of adverse conditions.

Guadalupe River Fly Fishing Guides Report and River Conditions:  Monday December 14, 2015; half day morning guide trip with Staci Trang from Los Angeles California produced a new fly fisher.  The weather was beautiful with clear blue skies and high temps in the 70's F.  Staci hooked and fought a nice rainbow trout in the three pound range that pulled like a bulldozer against the six weight fly rod.  It was nice having a pretty lady on the boat!

 

Guadalupe River Fly Fishing Guides Report and River Conditions:  December 15, 2015; evening scouting trip at the third crossing on the Guadalupe River below Canyon Lake showed beautiful weather with afternoon temps in the mid 70's F.  Canyon Dam release was 575 cfs with creeks adding another 50-60 cfs.  Guadalupe trout were hitting on nymphs with long leaders.  The strike indicator provided the moment to strike and set the hook.

 

Guadalupe River Fly Fishing Guides Report and River Conditions:  Wednesday December 16, 2015; Evening scouting trip with friends near the second crossing produced a couple of nice rainbows.  They nailed our purple buggers.  The sky was clear blue with calm winds and temps in the mid 60's F.  There was no one else on our part of the river.  The Canyon Dam release was around 600 cfs and the creeks and springs are adding another 50 cfs.  The water was green with a chalky stain and temps in the low 60's F.

Guadalupe River Fly Fishing Guides Report and River Conditions:  Thursday December 17th, 2015; evening scouting trip with friends produced some nice fish.  Canyon Dam release was 575 cfs,  The water was stained green with 2 feet of visibility.

Guadalupe River Fly Fishing Guides Report and River Conditions:  Sunday December 20, 2015; Carey Wood and his buddy Ben joined us from Houston.  The river flow was about 700 cfs including creek and spring flow.   The weather was overcast and light rain at times, with relatively high winds.  Even with adverse conditions we managed to land and release unharmed, several Guadalupe Trout.  The best fly of the day was the Prince Nymph.  Please see picture below.

Guadalupe River and Canyon Lake Fishing Guides Current Report and Conditions: Tuesday March 21, 2023. The morning started off with light rain and cool temps in the 60's. We saw this coming, so we rescheduled our trips until later in the week. We did however, do a quick scouting trip/survey for this report. There were several fly fishers at Action Angler so we jumped into the river to try our luck. There were lots of big rainbow trout in the channeled rocks down the hill from the shop. Our best flies were Sucker spawn egg patterns and San Juan Worms. We caught and released one Guadalupe trout that was in the 4 lb class. What's not to like? Guadalupe River Trout Fishing Guides and Canyon Lake Fishing Guide Current Report and Conditions: Thursday March 23, 2023. Sassy and Bill from Houston joined us for a Guadalupe Trout float on the lower section below Canyon Lake. The flow was low, but very fishable for an enjoyable raft float. We didn't encounter any other fishers on our section of the river and the weather was nice with comfortable temps and partly cloudy skies. We managed to catch and release a couple of really nice trout and some warmwater species too. The Rubber Legged Stonefly Nymph was our best fly. We also had success on Sucker Spawn egg patterns. Guadalupe Trout Fly Fishing Guides Current Report and Conditions: Friday March 24, 2023. A cold front blew in this morning with a brief rain shower and temps in the high 60's. The day quickly warmed to 80 degrees after the sun reappeared. There were a few anglers on the Guadalupe at the Action Angler access and they reported good catches before the temps warmed too high. There was a nice Mayfly hatch with Tricos and BWO's. The anglers we talked to said their best flies were Squirmy worms and Prince Nymphs. We also heard that sucker spawn egg patterns were doing well too.

Fly Fishing in Austin and San Antonio area Fishing Report and Current Conditions: Updated Saturday March 25, 2023. Canyon Lake Dam release was clear and cold with good fishing flows. The day started off cool with temps in the 50's. It quickly warmed to the 80's by noon with partly cloudy skies. There was another nice Mayfly hatch about 10:00 am with BWO's and Tricos too. There were quite a few fishers on the water, but it wasn't crowded. The best flies reported by successful fishers was the Prince Nymph, San Juan Worm and Damsel Nymph too. The water temp at Canyon Lake Dam tailrace was 54.6 degrees. Our company offers fly fishing trips in the San Antonio area, New Braunfels area and Austin area too.

Canyon Lake Fishing Guides and Guadalupe River Fly Fishing Guides Report and Current Conditions: Sunday, March 26, 2023. The morning started off cool with temps in the high 50's with overcast skies. By Noon the clouds burned off and temps rose to the high 70's and low 80's. There were a few fly fishers at the Action Angler access at the third crossing trying their luck. The bite was pretty good early on while the temps were still cool. We didn't see a Mayfly hatch, but we saw Damsels, and Caddis flitting around. Angler reports stated that egg patterns were still working, along with Damsel Nymphs and Caddis Emergers. We also heard the Prince Nymph was performing well. The flow from Canyon Lake Dam was enough for good fishing conditions and the water temp was 54.6 degrees F, at the Tailrace.

Guadalupe River and Canyon Lake Fishing Guides Current Report and Conditions: Monday March 27, 2023. Morning temps were cool in the high 50's with overcast skies. The skies became partly cloudy with some sunshine about 3:00 pm. There were few fly fishers but it wasn't crowded. We saw Caddis, Damsels and some afternoon Mayflies too. The wind was gusty from the northeast and blew the groups of bugs around. Successful flies were Stonefly Nymphs, Zug Bugs, Brown San Juan Worms, and egg patterns.

Guadalupe Trout Fly Fishing Guides and Canyon Lake Fishing Guides Current Report and Conditions: Thursday March 30, 2023. The morning started out overcast with mild temps in the lower 60's. The wind was light from the northeast. The Canyon Lake Dam release was cold and clear feeding the Guadalupe River. We did some scouting at the Action Angler access on River Road, near New Braunfels. There was only one other person fishing, and he was killing it. He saw him catch and release fish, after fish; running two nymphs below a strike indicator. One rainbow he landed had to be over 4 lbs and it jumped like an acrobat. We finally broke down and asked the guy what he was using. He said a stonefly nymph with a sucker spawn egg dropper.

 

Guadalupe River and Canyon Lake Fishing Guides Fishing Report and Current Conditions: Saturday, April 1, 2023. Robin and Jerry joined us for a short morning float on the Guadalupe River. The Canyon Lake Dam release was clear and cold with plenty of uncrowded fishing spots. The morning started off clear with temps in the high 40's. The day quickly warmed to about 80 degrees around noon, but the clouds rolled back in to cool us down a little for the afternoon. We hooked some nice rainbows and we tangled with some bass. Our best flies were Zug Bugs, Prince Nymphs, and egg patterns.

Guadalupe River and Canyon Lake Fishing Guides Report and Current Conditions: Sunday April 2, 2023. Canyon Lake Dam release was clear and cold with a very fishable flow. The day started off cool with cloudy skies and calm winds. There were very few fishers on the water and that was a welcome surprise. Robin Johnson and Amy Hardberger joined us for a half day scouting trip on the Guadalupe River in the lower trout section. We hooked several nice fish and Robin landed a really nice rainbow trout on a Nymph rig. The stonefly with rubber legs was a good performer, and the Prince Nymph got some action too. We saw Tricos hatching, Caddis, Damsels and Crane Flies too. There were a few fish eating bugs on the top, but not great numbers doing that. Our action was sub-surface.

Guadalupe Trout Fishing Guides Fly Fishing Report and Current Conditions: Wednesday April 5, 2023. Rusty Heitzman joined us for a fun filled day on the lower Guadalupe River near Canyon Lake. The day started out with a little light rain and overcast skies as a norther blew in. The winds were around 20 mph and the river flow was fine for fishing. We kept waiting on an insect hatch, but it never came. The wind might have kept them disbursed. It was pretty slow, but we managed a few fish including a really hard fighting male rainbow about 3 lbs. Our best fly was a bead head stonefly nymph with rubber legs. There wasn't anyone else on our stretch of the river and that was fine with us.

Guadalupe River and Canyon Lake Fishing Guides Report and Current Conditions: Friday April 7, 2023. Guadalupe River flow has increased slightly from recent rainfall. The tailrace, water temp at Canyon Lake Dam was 54 degrees with clear water conditions. Today was pretty wet with about an inch of local rainfall. We only saw a couple of people on the water trying to get there fly fishing in. We rescheduled our trips to better conditions and we were glad. Tomorrow has a better forecast and we'll hit the river with Jessica and her Dad. We offer guided fly fishing trips in the Texas Hill Country and beyond.

Guadalupe Trout Fly Fishing Guide and Canyon Lake Fishing Guides Current Report and Conditions: Saturday April 8, 2023. Half day float/fly fishing lesson with Jessica and her Dad from Midland Texas produced two new fly fishers. They were smart and listened carefully to the guide. The day was overcast with cool temps for this time of year. The wind was from the north about 5-10 mph. We didn't see any insects hatching and that was a bummer. We did see, some spawning sucker fishes and very few fishers. We managed to land some fish, including a 20 inch rainbow trout that Jessica caught and released. Our best flies were the San Juan Worm and bead head stonefly nymphs. What's not to like?

Guadalupe River and Canyon Lake Fishing Guide Report and Current Conditions: Sunday April 9, 2023. It started out with overcast skies and temps in the high 50's. The Canyon Lake Dam release was cold and clear. The river was not crowded and there were fish being caught...and released. We heard several fishers say that the Damsel Nymph, Prince Nymph, and Stone Fly Nymph were doing the job. 4X tippet was needed and fluorocarbon was the go to leader. The release from Canyon Lake Dam was clear and cold at 54 degrees F. Scott from Dripping Springs, TX joined us for a short float on the lower section below Rio Raft Company. There was a nice Caddis hatch and BWO's too. The morning was good, but the afternoon was slow until we rigged up for warmwater species. The stonefly nymph saved us. We caught and released about fifteen fish. Canyon Lake Fishing Guide and Guadalupe River Fly Fishing Guide Current Report and Conditions: Thursday April 13, 2023. Afternoon scouting trip on Canyon Lake with Chris Jackson from Action Angler produced several nice bass on fly. The day was epic with temps at 72 degrees and almost no humidity, and clear blue skies. The water was crystal clear on the upper end and the crawfish fly was the ticket. We fished out of the Hewes Redfisher 18 (poling skiff) with a 150 Yamaha outboard. Canyon Lake is 78% full and the water is really clear, in most places. The were not many boats on the water and that was pleasant.

Canyon Lake Fishing Guides and Guadalupe River Fly Fishing Guides Current Report and Conditions: Sunday April 16, 2023. Canyon Lake level was 78% full with clear water conditions. The day started off cool with temps in the low 60's F. The winds were from the northeast at 10-20 mph. There were not very many people out, and it was nice to see that. We had good reports of largemouth and smallmouth bass still in various stages of spawning, The striper activity was also good with a topwater bite and schools on top of shad baitballs. The bleeding shad fly, was the top performer on a weight forward floating flyline. The upper end of the lake at the river mouth, was producing white bass at 15-25 feet of depth. Crappie were also being caught around drowned timber in the river channel.

Canyon Lake Fishing Guide and Guadalupe River Fly Fishing Guide Current Report and Conditions: Monday April 17, 2023. Scouting trip on Canyon Lake with Spencer McHaney and his lovely lady Alissa was a funtime. We had some action, but overall the bite was slow. The wind started out calm with clear blue skies and temps in the mid 50's. The wind promptly picked up to 15 mph in a couple of hours. Our best fly was the Game Changer in black. Canyon Lake is 78% percent full with clear water conditions on the lower end, near the dam; and relatively clear with a green stain on the confluence with the Guadalupe River.

The day started off cool with temps in the high 50's. The morning was overcast, but the sun came out around 1:00 pm with partly cloudy skies. It warmed to 84 degrees before the clouds appeared around 4:00. The trout bite was slow, but we managed some nice bass on fly, downstream of Rio Guadalupe Resort about 1.5 miles. Our best fly was the black popper with white rubber legs. Canyon Lake Fishing Guides and Guadalupe River Fly Fishing Guides Current Report and Conditions: Friday April 21, 2023. Overnight thunderstorms brought hail, flash flooding and high winds to the Guadalupe River Valley. The lightning was constant, but no damage was seen. The river rose about 50% from its pre rain flow. The channel was chocolate with some debris. The aquifer went up slightly from rain in the recharge zone. We rescheduled our trips for this morning and we're looking forward to getting back out there tomorrow morning!

Canyon Lake Fishing Guide and Guadalupe River Fly Fishing Guide Current Report and Conditions: Saturday April 22, 2023. Morning trip on Canyon Lake produced some hook ups and big bass follows. Our clients were beginner fly fishers and our trip was mainly a lesson. We actually started out with a casting lesson on the bow of the boat and transitioned to fishing after we got the casting mechanics down. Canyon Lake is 78% full and the water is clear in the big part of the lake, and stained dark green and brown where the local creeks come in. Our best fly was a crawfish pattern and it produced some action. The release from Canyon Lake Dam into the Guadalupe River was clear and cold. Canyon Lake Fishing Guides and Guadalupe River Fly Fishing Guides Fishing Report and Current Conditions: Updated Tuesday April 25, 2023. Canyon Lake Dam release is unchanged. The flow is clear and cold at 55 degrees at the tailrace. Short scouting trip near Action Angler showed the usual players in their habitat. The trout were continuing to hold on, and the sunfish and bass were most active. Small yellow poppers were the best flies of the morning. There wasn't anybody else on the water and the conditions were overcast with a cool northeast breeze. We didn't see a hatch, but it could have happened in the afternoon. Two boat trip on the Guadalupe River with Chris Jackson of Action Angler produced some good times with our clients. George and his family came from West Virginia to catch a Texas trout. We did that and more! We saw some Hexagenias hatching, a few Tricos and some Damsels. It wasn't a prolific hatch by any means. The wind was gusting, but we had clear blue skies and comfortable temps. The river flow was clear and cold. The epoxy backed stonefly nymph enticed several fish and we used some San Juan Worms too.

Canyon Lake Fishing Guide and Guadalupe River Fly Fishing Guide Fishing Report and Current Conditions: Saturday April 29, 2023. Canyon Lake Dam release was clear and cold at 56 degrees at the tailrace. The morning started off cool with gusty winds that remained most of the day. The high temp was 68 degrees and there were clear blue skies after the cold front passage. There was a bad storm yesterday evening with heavy rain and hail. The river was clear this morning though. There were very few fishermen out, but there were a couple of guides with clients struggling in the high winds. We rescheduled our trips for better conditions because the clients were able to. We didn't see a hatch, but the high winds could have blown the bugs away.

Devils River Fly Fishing Report and Current Conditions: May 2nd thru May 5th, 2023. The river flow was low but very fishable. The weather was nice with daytime temps in the high 70's and low 80's. Helena Agri Inc booked 4 of their guys to fish with us. Helena is a wordlwide leader in agriculture. We caught and released too many bass to count and the weather was awesome. We fire grilled our meals and had shore lunches on the banks of the river. The special fly was the game changer and it slayed the fish!

Devils River Fly Fishing Guide Current Report and River Conditions: May 16-19, 2023. Awesome fishing trip based out of Sycamore Canyon Ranch was a success and fun party with awesome clients. Jerod from Midland, Texas hosted everyone. We caught a lot of bass on fly and conventional gear too. The weather was great and we had some great fire grilled meals! The game changer and meat whistle were go to flies. The flow was low and the ther river was a little cloudy, but it fished great! It's been really cool this year for Texas!

Eli Lerma and his family joined us from Midland, TX and they were smart about learning to fly fish. They listened carefully to their guide/instructor. We caught and released quite a few fish, but nothing was large. The weather was nice and there was nobody else on the river.

We had a two boat trip with the Harder family from New Braunfels. They all picked up fly fishing rapidly after a brief lesson. We caught and released quite a few fish caught on fly. Our best fly was the Game Changer. The weather was nice and the temps reached 82 degrees, which is cool for this time of year.

The weather was nice and cool in the morning with temps in the 70's. We didn't see a big fly hatch, but it could have happened later in the day.

We saw some stripers busting bait on the surface but they spooked when we got closer. We got some nice largemouth on flies though. Canyon Lake Fishing Guide and Guadalupe River Fly Fishing Guide Fishing Report and Current Conditions: Saturday July 8, 2023. The outflow from Canyon Lake Dam was 77cfs with clear and cold water conditions at the tailrace. There were tons of people out on the river and lake today but they didn't show up, mostly until noon. This gives mornings a chance. We didn't see a major hatch on the river this morning, but we saw Damsels, Caddis, and some Mayflies flitting around. There were too many people on the water in the afternoon to fish, but that's to be expected.

The weather wasn't bad, but it got pretty hot in the afternoon. There was a little breeze, but not enough wind to make the water rough. There weren't too many boats in the morning, but more came out in the afternoon. James got a little action on his topwater fly and Truman caught a feisty largemouth on his fluke. There were very few people on the river this morning and the temps were comfortable until noon. Fortunately, we ended our scouting trip about 11:30 because we got an early start. We got some largemouth action on streamers and some big sunfish attacked our poppers. We even caught a catfish on a Hopper/Dropper rig. We saw damsels, caddis and lots of Dragon flies. Canyon Lake Dam release was 77 cfs with clear and cold water conditions from the bottom of Canyon Lake. We saw several insect species hatching on the lower Guadalupe near the third crossing. We saw Damsels, Caddis, Tricos and BWO's at times. The bugs are in the river. Canyon Lake was not really crowded today and weekdays are preferred. We saw some stripers boiling on top around 7:00 am this morning near the dam. There were very few people out this morning and it looks like we're past the peak of high tourist season. That's good news, because we'll get the lake and river back to non crowded conditions. We didn't see a prolific hatch on the lower river, but we did see caddis, tricos and damsels. Canyon Lake was clear and blue with small chop less than a foot. The wakeboard boats came out at noon, but the traffic was light. The release from Canyon Lake Dam was 77.1 cfs with clear and cold water conditions. The day started off with temps in the high 70's and reached over 90 degrees in the afternoon. This is why we've been doing morning trips only. The lake was not crowded and the river had nobody on it, except for a handful of early tubers. We didn't see any major hatches but we saw grasshoppers, some caddis, and Damsels too. The lake had some "buck" bass busting the surface in the morning. There were a couple of schools of stripers busting bait in the early morning near the dam. Canyon Lake was pretty much deserted this morning with only a hand full of fishing boats. That will change this afternoon as the out-of-towners arrive. The weather was nice this morning with clear blue skies with temps in the 70's. The water in the Lake was very clear and had a blue green tint. The Guadalupe River was uncrowded today with nice flows and cold water below Canyon Dam. We didn't see any big hatches, but we spotted some bugs being devoured by small bass and sunfish. Morning scouting trip to Canyon Lake revealed slightly lowered water conditions, but still in 70 percentile range. The boat traffic is way down since the schools are about to start up again. The Guadalupe below Canyon Lake is flowing at 77 cfs with cold and clear temps at the tailrace. We saw some Dragon flies and Caddis and Damsel flies too on the river. We didn't see any other fishers in the morning, but we only saw a 3 mile stretch below the dam. Canyon Lake Dam release was 112 cfs, with clear and cold water conditions. The Lake was not crowded in the morning and a few boats showed up in the afternoon. The day started off cool with temps in the high 70's and low humidity. The water level is about 70 percent capacity. There are black bass schooling on the points and peninsulas, and the weedbeds are holding good fish too. The Guadalupe river is flowing cold and relatively clear with almost nobody out today. We didn't see any insects hatching, but we probably had bad timing. We saw two fly fishermen catching, and releasing some nice largemouth on fly near Lazy L and L. Canyon Lake Dam release was 117 cfs with clear and cold water conditions. Canyon Lake is still in the 70% range for capacity. The water is still clear with a thermocline about 12 feet down at the intersection of colder water temps in the 60's and high 50's at depth. There were very few boats on the Lake today and more fishermen than jet skiers. We heard good reports of largemouth bass being caught on the hydrilla vegetation areas of the lake. The Guadalupe River below Canyon Dam was uncrowded, but we saw a few kayakers on the slightly higher river flows at 117 cfs. We didn't see any fly fishers out, but we saw some good hopper takes and rises to Dragon flies and Damsels too. Canyon Lake is still near 70% capacity and the water is clear with hungry fish. We saw lots of bass attacking topwater patterns cast among weed beds and rocky shorelines. The boat traffic has been way down, since it's back to school time...yea! The Guadalupe River Flow downstream of Canyon Dam was clear and cold and flowing well at 112 cfs. We didn't get a chance to wet a line but, we saw grasshoppers clobbered on the surface and lots of Caddis, Damsels, and Dragon flies. Canyon Lake was not very crowded as we get back to school, so to speak. The morning started off cool with temps in the 70's and overcast skies. The clouds broke up, for the most part around 10:30 am. We saw stripers busting bait on the surface as we were headed toward the mouth of the river to target largemouth. We were not disappointed. We got several fish on Game Changers and Clousers. The Guadalupe River was deserted by mid afternoon, because the tourists were headed home. We saw a couple of Fly Fishers at Lazy L and L, and they said they had good luck on bass. Canyon Lake was deserted on a quiet weekday afternoon. We didn't see any other boats or fishermen. The skies were overcast with temps in the low 80's. We saw several pods of stripers attacking bait on the surface and the seagulls were around to pluck the stunned baitfish from the surface. We picked up some medium sized largemouth while scouting near Canyon Lake Marina. The Guadalupe River was quiet too, with no tubers or fishermen to be seen.

Afternoon scouting trip on Canyon Lake revealed a few boaters, but it was not crowded. The lake is low, but very fishable and lots of clear water. We got some topwater eats on bass and some sub-surface action too. We were throwing poppers at first, but we switched to streamers a little later. The white Clouser Minnow was our best performer. Afternoon scouting trip on Canyon Lake revealed a large goup of striped bass crashing bait near Canyon Lake Marina. It was all surface action and they ate our flies too. Once again, the White Clouser Minnow did the trick. There were only a couple of other boats on the lake and they were getting largemouth on the points and sunken timber. On the way back, we hit the Guadalupe and didn't see any other fishers. There was a massive Trico hatch though. The flow was about 70 cfs with cold and clear water condition. The afternoon was partly cloudy with comfortable temps in the high 70's. We didn't see any other fishers on the river. There was a nice caddis hatch and some mayflies too. We saw a couple of fish rising, but only sporadically. We caught and released several nice largemouth bass on Brown Clouser Minnows. They were frisky and jumped several times. We started at Rio and rafted about three miles to Lazy L. The Guadalupe Rainbow Trout were hungry and we caught and released several nice ones on nymphs. There were very few people on the river and it was relaxing. There was a PMD hatch, but we didn't see any fish rising. The water was clear and cold flowing from the bottom of Canyon Lake. The fish were hungry and eating flies readily. The weather was cool, but with clear skies. The river was not crowded and the flows were cold and clear. As the morning warmed, there was a nice Trico hatch and Caddis buzzing around the surface. We didn't see any fish rising, so we drifted nymphs and San Juan Worms. Guadalupe Trout Fly Fishing Guides Report and Current Conditions: Saturday November 25, 2023. Scouting trip on the Guadalupe below Canyon Lake Dam was fun and action packed. We fished the area around the horseshoe and there were hungry trout to be caught and released. The magic fly was the Prince Nymph and we got some action on Caddis emergers too. The flow from Canyon Lake was clear and cold. There were quite a few people on the water, but not crowded. The weather was overcast with light mist and temps in the high 50's.

Guadalupe River Trout Fishing Report and Fly Fishing Conditions: Monday November 28, 2023. Morning trip with Charlie from Houston produced too many fish to count. The weather started off cool around 38 degrees, but warmed to the mid 50's after a few hours. The sky was partly cloudy with light winds from the northeast. We saw a lot of insects hatching with Caddis, Tricos, and a few Damsels too. It was Charlie's second time to fly fish in the last year, but he jumped back onto the horse and galloped along. The day started off cool with temps in the high 30's, but it quickly warmed to the high 60's. The were nice hatches of Caddis, Tricos and PMD's, but we saw very few fish rising. Guadalupe Trout Fly Fishing Guide Fishing Report and Current Conditions: Sunday December 10, 2023. Morning float on the lower Guadalupe River greeted us with clear blue skies and brisk winds from the north at 45 degrees. We did a float in the Canyon that was protected from the chilly winds. The winds died down around 10:00 am and it was very pleasant with temps in the high 50's and low 60's. We saw a massive Trico hatch and quickly tied on a size 22 fly that matched the bugs. They immediately hooked trout and the fights were on. The San Juan Worm did a pretty good job too. The flow from Canyon Lake Dam was clear and cold with a few small rapids on our beat. Guadalupe River Fly Fishing Guides Rainbow Trout Report and Current Conditions: Tuesday December 12, 2023. Guadalupe River Flow was clear and cold with with great weather conditions. Brief scouting trip at the third crossing showed several wade fishermen and women. The winds were light to start but picked up later in the day. A quick survey of fishers reported good luck on nymphs drifted under an indicator. Egg patterns seemed to be the most successful. We decided to reschedule our trips and enjoy the Holiday Spirit indoors. It was a good call. There were some hearty fly fishers on the river though. The reports we heard were positive from this group though, with nice rainbows caught and released on streamers.
